The topic of cross-contamination and uniforms is not a new one, but can foster a very heated debate. I have recently heard a discussion regarding a local hospital’s rules for certain departments to be required to only wear their uniforms at work, with disciplinary action taken if they are seen outside of the department, as well as outside of the hospital, in their department uniform. Medical professionals are then required to wear 1 set of scrubs to work, change into their department uniform scrubs, and then change back once they complete their shift to go home. The intention of the rule is to prevent cross-contamination from bacteria, germs and what not passed along through contact with clothing. What do you think about this rule? Do you work in departments/ offices/ hospitals with similar regulations? What are your workplaces doing in regards to preventing the spread of disease and illness through fabrics and clothing?
Many uniform companies have heard the concerns of the industry and have answered with high tech fabrics with antimicrobial finishes. Landau’s Bioshield® as well as the Do No Harm line are two offered by Scrubs & Beyond with very impressive antibacterial finishes.
The Bioshield® line brings an advanced line of protection with the durability and comfort Landau is famous for. The Bioshield® finish is EPA Registered and USDA approved. The active ingredient in the treatment forms a positively charged polymer which chemically bonds to the fabric and acts like a bed of microscopic spikes. The spikes pierce the cell walls of microbes which may come into contact with the garments. Because Bioshield® is a mechanical process, not a poison it does not contain toxins, and is quite environmentally friendly. There is not a potential for resistance to be built to the finish, or for creating a “superbug”. The finish lasts the life of the garment with no special laundering conditions required. Simply wash and wear and you will get the benefits of this amazing product. Bioshield® is effective against many bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, E coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, and various Salmonella strains. An added benefit of the Bioshield® finish is that it also is resistant to mold, mildew, algae, and yeast growth. Click HERE to see more technical information regarding the Bioshield® finish.

The Bioshield® line consists of both ladies and unisex styles as well as jackets and lab coats, all at a great price.
Do No Harm is anther line that contains an antimicrobial finish, however, this line uses the SmartSilver finish to fight germs. The SmartSilver finish forms a permanent bond to the fabric and will last the life of the garment. It will not wash off, wear off, nor will it compromise the softness, or performance of the fabric it is applied to. SmartSilver is created from re-claimed silver sources like discarded film to create a sustainable source that will live up to the DNH promise of environmental responsibility. The finish optimizes silver’s natural antimicrobial and anti odor properties at the microscopic level to fight off harmful infections. To find out more about the SmartSilver finish. Click HERE.
