The Royal Wedding is Less than 24 Hours Away!

Thursday, April 28th, 2011 BY Celia

Celia-HWedding Bells are ready to ring as the world prepares to watch the marriage of Prince William and (soon-to-be Princess) Kate.  The wedding is scheduled to air Friday, April 29, 2011 at 6:00AM/5:00AM Central, so if you can’t tune in while you’re on break, set your DVR at home!

I’m sure there’s at least one person that wants to know, why is this such a Big Deal?  Well, this is the first royal wedding in 20 years, since Prince Charles & Princess Diana.  Secondly, it’s not often that almost 2,000 dignitaries, monarchs, and political leaders get together for an -actual- celebration.  Thirdly, how often do we get to see a future king get married?  It is sure to be quite glamorous, gaudy, and over-the-top luxe…which would make most Scrubinista’s fancy become quite tickled.

So, the big question is:  How will you celebrate the big Royal Wedding?  Personally, I won’t be watching at exactly 5:00AM CDT to watch the events happen live, but if you’re on the way home from work/on the way to work, you can tune in to E! or The Royal Channel and listen in.  Wear a tiara for the day (and a boa if you dare).  If you want to have food fun, you could definitely throw a small party with your co-workers who share the Wedding Fever.  These unique snacks (linked to recipes from Betty Crocker®) are the must-have cure for a delicious Royal Wedding Day.  After all, if the newlyweds are having a post-royal wedding feast, why can’t we?

A very nice thing to note is that the couple isn’t using all this press about their upcoming matrimony all for themselves.  Very prominent on their royal wedding website is a place where anyone can make a monetary donation to Prince William’s charity which focuses it’s funds to 6 areas, primarily helping children and future generations.  Here’s the charity’s website with more information.

If you’re planning on doing anything fun or interesting, let us know.  Have a great weekend!  Until next time…

Battling the Top 5 Germiest Spots in Your Home

Thursday, April 7th, 2011 BY Celia

Celia-HApril 7th may be known as No Housework Day, but you may want to break out the gloves and get some heavy-duty spring cleaning done once you read this article from Yahoo!  highlighting the 5 Germiest Spots in Your Home…yikes!

As healthcare professionals, you know how important cleanliness is to your patients and co-workers, but after a long 10, 12, or 14-hour shift, sometimes the last thing you really want to do when you get home is clean.  Well, maybe we can all get in the habit of looking out for these key areas (and, in the meanwhile, thank Good Housekeeping for the heads-up):

Cleaning Up the Home!

Cleaning Up the Home!

I’ve never really been a spring cleaner; I’m more of a winter cleaner. At the beginning of each year, I make sure to scour my apartment from top to bottom to get rid of “last year’s” dirt. During this year’s ritual cleaning, I noticed many places and items that I’ve neglected to clean. Here are five grimy things you may also overlook. You clean out the dust container or replace the bag routinely but when was the last time you cleaned the vacuum upholstery tool or brush roll? Check your manual for the how-to. Using scissors, cut off any carpet fibers or hair entangled around the brush.

2: Handbags:
Spot clean fabric bags with a gentle detergent solution like Woolite and flip the purse inside out to wipe down the inner lining. On finished leather purses, use a leather conditioning cleaner — I love Guardsman Leather Wipes. And, if you place your purse on the floor in a restaurant or even worse, in the ladies’ room, never put it on your kitchen table or countertop.

1: Vacuum Cleaner Brushes and Attachments:

3: Credit/Debit Cards: These everyday essentials get handled by lots of people, and germs can lurk in the crevices around the numbers. Give debit and credit cards a quick cleaning with an alcohol wipe and let them air dry before placing them back in your wallet.

4: Blinds: The material they’re made of — metal, wood, or fabric — determines how you dust them. For metal blinds, wipe with a sock lightly dampened with water or multi-purpose cleaner. For wood blinds follow the same procedure using only a little tap water. Do not overwet the wood and be sure to buff dry right away. For fabric blinds, go over the blinds with a dry microfiber cloth.

5: Yoga Mats: After a few sessions, you probably notice that your sweaty hands and feet are leaving dirty marks on your mat, which can lead to yucky bacteria growth. Most mat manufacturers recommend occasionally hand cleaning their products with water and mild soap. All-purpose cleaners can eat away at the material.

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day: Food & Fun Galore!

Thursday, March 17th, 2011 BY Celia

Celia-HHappy St. Patrick’s Day Scrubinistas!  Maybe it’s the color green or maybe it’s because it’s almost officially Spring, but Irish or not, St. Patrick’s Day always gets us in the mood for food & fun galore!

There are different meanings behind St. Patty’s Day and these are some of the St. Patrick’s Day Fun Facts that I could dig up:

♣ St. Patrick’s Day was originally started to celebrate the life of a great man named (you guessed it) Saint Patrick, who was a missionary and the patron saint of Ireland.

♣ The original color associate with Saint Patrick and his day was BLUE.  It wasn’t until years after this holiday grew that it changed to GREEN.  Why?  Well, according to legend, St. Pat wore a shamrock on his outercoat to explain the details of the Holy Trinity.

♣ Thinking of visiting Ireland for St. Patty’s Day next year?  The parades, shamrocks, and green foods are primarly for tourists only – in Ireland, it is more of a religious holiday (like Christmas and Easter).

♣ Corned Beef & Cabbage is not considered an Irish National dish. The connection with Saint Patrick’s Day specifically originates as part of Irish-American culture as beef was generally considered less desirable in Ireland but an affordable alternative to pork in the United States.  Click Here for an in-depth blog post about the History of Corned Beef.

Did that last fact about Corned Beef inspire you to make a St. Patty’s meal today for your family or co-workers…and now you’re looking for St. Patrick’s Day recipes?  Click Here to visit allrecipes.com’s St. Patrick’s Day category!  Or try this recipe for Corned Beef & Cabbage sliders!

Hopefully, you’re having a great St. Patrick’s Day and are wearing your green-colored medical scrubs today!  Until next time, check out these images of St. Patrick’s Day being celebrated around the world…

Feel like a Movie Star for the Oscar’s this weekend!

Thursday, February 24th, 2011 BY Celia

Celia-HLights.  Cameras.  Action.

This year’s Oscars are only days away and with lots of commericals and buzz all over the nation, everyone seems to have been bitten by the Showbiz Bug.   If you’re planning to watch the 83rd Academy Awards® this Sunday, perhaps you can throw your own mini-Oscar party to celebrate the celebrities (and yes, if you’re administration will let you, you could use these party tips at your job for a low cost).  Check it out:

1.)  Party Theme:  Every great party starts with a great theme.  Even though it’s for the Oscar’s, maybe you could center your party around your favorite movies/actors of the past year.  Or, if you’re at work and your department has to wear wine or burgundy, have a “Wine & Cheese” party.  Your scrubs are the ‘wine’ and everyone brings in a cheese-related dish or dessert.  Very Scrubinista chic.

2.)  All Star Snacks:  If you decide to have a theme, make treats that coordinate.  Just make sure the movie-related snacks can be enjoyed while on-the-move (whether from room to room mingling or on a quick snack break during your shift).

3.)  Get Glamourous:  If you’re having a get-together at home, ask people to dress up in cocktail attire.  If you’re at work (and your dress code allows it), wear your most fabulous print top with flair.  Stardom starts with style and no Movie Star wants to be on the Worst-Dressed List.

4.)  Break out the “red carpet treatment”.   Treat your guests (or co-workers) like stars!   Have sparkling cider waiting for them in fancy glasses when they arrive.  Maybe get a group of people together to be the paparazzi, handing out boas and sunglasses, or taking pictures as they walk in the room.  Really have fun with it!

5.)  Vote for your Favs:  Thanks to Moviefone.com, you can printout this free Oscar’s ballot containing all the nominees of the major categories.  Pass copies around and have everyone enter their answers before the ceremony begins.  Then you can keep track of your progress as each category is announced…which makes the whole experience more interactive.  Your guest (or co-worker) with the most correct answers could win an award!

Have a fantastic weekend Scrubinistas!  Until next time…
