Crazy for Coffee? Tips on Breaking Your Caffeine Habit!

Thursday, September 30th, 2010 BY Celia

Celia-HYesterday (Wednesday, September 29, 2010) was National Coffee Day and if you’re like millions of Americans, you’ve probably had at least one cup of joe today.  But do you feel like you may drink too many cups of coffee or too many caffeinated beverages like energy drinks or sodas?  Here are two simple questions to check your status:

- Do you ever have headaches after missing a day or even hours without a cup of coffee?
- If you forget to have coffee, or run out of time to grab a cup, do you constantly think about coffee until you finally drink some?
- Have you felt drowsy, irritable, or unable to concentrate between drinks?

Chances are if you said yes (or maybe on occassion) to any of the above questions, you may be hooked on your caffeinated drink of choice.  But that’s okay, below are a few easy tips on how you can break this cycle:

1.) Start Slow:  decrease your daily amount of caffeine until you completely stop drinking it.  Replace regular with decaf.  Then instead of a full cup of decaf, try a half cup of decaf and dilute it with hot water.  Or, if you want your regular cup of coffee instead of 6 cups a day, drink 3.  Same rules apply to energy drinks and soda.

2.) Try Tea or Juice:  switch to a different pick-me-up drink like green, earl grey, chai, or black tea or an organically produced juice like apple, orange, and grape.  Not only are they relatively affordable but they also provide your body with antioxidents and, in most cases, little to no caffeine.

3.) Sleep:  Most of our “need” for caffeine comes from a lack of energy or stress.  Go to bed an hour earlier and you’ll definitely begin to feel a difference in your day-to-day activities.

4.) Be Patient:  Hang in there Scrubinista!  Strong cravings for caffeine won’t subside over night.  But as long as you pace yourself a day at a time, you will become less dependent over time.

Yes, caffeine has it’s health benefits, but too much of anything can cause a problem.  Have you successfully given up caffeine or any food-related habit?  Share your story in the comments and encourage others who may be starting, if you like.  Here’s to a Happier and Healthier You for the upcoming holidays and beyond!  Until next time…

Supporting Breast Cancer Awareness

Thursday, September 16th, 2010 BY Emma

Emma-H

Almost everyone has been touched in some way by Breast Cancer. Whether it be a parent, spouse, friend, co-worker or even you yourself, it affects us all. Supporting the cause is critical to the hope of some day finding a cure.

There are many ways that we can all help and here are a few:

-Participate in a local walk/run either individually or as a work, family or friend group. Suggest that your employer match the donations you are able to gather. Scrubs & Beyond home office is participating, for the second year, in the American Cancer Society’s “Making Strides toward a World with More Birthdays” walk/run.  We have made it into a friendly competition to push each other to get the word out and get donations.  It’s a lot of fun to help others and a great team building activity for the office.

-If you are unable to participate in the actual walk, volunteer to help either on race day or even before with whatever is needed.  They always are looking for help to make an event successful.

-Support someone already participating with a financial donation.

-Show your support in what you wear! Check out our Breast Cancer Awareness Apparel and Accessories.

For the 2nd year, Medline has created a video to thank all the healthcare workers and breast cancer survivors who showed incredible spirit in support of this cause.

This new Pink Glove Dance video features more than 4,000 healthcare workers and breast cancer survivors from all over the United States and into Canada. The Pink Glove Dance: the Sequel features 11 hospitals, 3 nursing homes and 5 separate sites where breast cancer survivors danced.

In October, they will begin releasing videos specific to select facility plus one for the three nursing homes and one for the survivor shoots. You can visit their site each day and watch and enjoy the new videos.

Here is the release schedule:

Let us know what you’re doing to show your support!!

Top 10 Reasons You Know You’re a Nurse

Thursday, September 9th, 2010 BY Celia

Celia-HThe other day, I came across this fun article from Sean Dent over at ScrubsMag on the Top 10 Reasons You Know You’re a Nurse…can you relate?  Check out the list below:

1. You wash your hands before you use the bathroom.  Isn’t microbiology a wonderful thing? My microbiology class scared the be-jeezus outta me. After that class I never looked at another public bathroom, restaurant, or salad bar the same. Things I notice about the ‘cleanliness’ of society leaves me speechless sometimes. If they only knew what they were really touching.

2. You know the smell of different diarrhea to identify it.  Can you say C-diff? And on that note you can also differentiate different disease processes or infections simply by their smell. Ever smelled GI bleed? How about pseudomonas?

3. You check the caller ID on your day off to see if anyone from the hospital is trying to call and ask you to work.  You’re lying if you’ve never done this.

4. Discussing bodily fluids over a gourmet meal seems perfectly normal to you.  I’m married to a nurse, so we speak freely all the time during our conversations. We have to ‘check’ ourselves – or be told to ‘check’ our topic of conversations when we have family gatherings. It’s not pretty.

5. Every time someone asks you for a pen you can find at least 4 of them on you.  Nurses and their pens. You know very well you hoard and protect your ‘good’ pen, or your ‘favorite’ pen like it’s your stethoscope. I know I’ve scolded a few secretaries, doctors and fellow nurses for havin’ some sticky fingers.

6. Your bladder can expand to the size of a Winnebago’s water tank.  Peeing? What’s that? Bathroom break? What’s that?

7. You find yourself checking out other customer’s veins in grocery waiting lines.  This may only apply to those of us in the critical care world – but you know you do it. You see someone with ‘pipe cleaners’ for veins and all you can think is ‘MAN- I could get a 16 in there’. Besides it’s a rare occasion you start an IV on ANYONE who isn’t in their 90’s and dehydrated!

8. Your finger has gone places you never thought possible.  Whether on purpose or accident we sometimes wish we didn’t share this trait.

9. You think caffeine should be available in IV form.  Oh – dare to dream.

10. You’ve used the word ‘rationale’, the phrase ‘as evidenced by’, or quoted a nursing diagnosis in everyday life.   And I thought this would stop or drop off once I was a couple years out of basic nursing school!   Nah. I still do it.

Do you have your own reasons to add?  Add them to the comment section of this post!  Until next time…

8 Rules for a Regret-Free Happy Hour

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010 BY Brie

Brie-H

With the holiday weekend coming up, and our office being in a celebratory mood, I thought this article from Nursinglink may be very helpful to fellow Scrubinistas. These tips are great for keeping you celebrating smartly in style!! Also, be sure to check out our Aniversary Sale Specials and Free Shipping  for the perfect outfit to crossover from work to fun.

8 Rules for a Regret-Free Happy Hour

At the end of a hellish shift, it can be fun to go out and have a few drinks with your favorite nursing friends. But drinking with your colleagues isn’t like drinking with your friends on the weekend. The same rules just don’t apply.ist1_8560762-ladies-making-faces

No matter how laid-back your hospital or office may be, your actions always reflect on your professional nursing persona. So what kind of behavior is appropriate? Check out our happy hour etiquette guide for smooth sailing!

Rule #1 – Pretend You Are Still at the Office

What happens at happy hour doesn’t necessarily stay at happy hour. You don’t want other nurses at the hospital to gossip about your drunken texts, or post an embarrassing photo of you in the staff room! Keep your wits about you when joining other nurses for drinks. Act like you’re still in a professional setting, and that all the usual HR rules still apply. This should give you a solid guideline of how to act.

Rule #2 – Treat Your Boss Like You’re Still at Work

Just because you’re sharing a pint doesn’t mean you’re now BFFs. Going over a patient’s file with your supervisor while he’s trying to enjoy his Pilsner is not going to gain you any brownie points. Not to mention a privacy issue! Chances are he’s not going to remember what you talked about the next day anyway, so why are you trying so hard? As with your other colleagues, keep the conversation light and superficial. Definitely avoid speaking in medical jargon and don’t start quizzing other nurses about proper patient education methods.

Rule #3 – Don’t Overstay Your Welcome

Having a few drinks after your shift with fellow nurses is fine. Closing down the bar with them is not. The drunker you get throughout the night, the more likely you are to embarrass yourself in front of your entire staff. Don’t even think about showing up to your next shift drunk. That’s a patient liability suit waiting to happen!

But if you do find yourself stuck at the bar until last call with other nurses, remember Rule #4 …

Rule #4 – Hospital Relations Are Off Limits

No matter how hot he is and how drunk you are, it’s not ok to flirt with the lab guy. While legitimate work relationships may be acceptable at your hospital, sloppy drunken hookups are not covered in the HR training. These are people you will have to work with on a daily basis — having an awkward hookup relationship with other nurses and colleagues just makes it more difficult for you to do your job properly. Eying your own McDreamy? Before you chat up the doctor, make sure it’s you, not the alcohol, doing the talking. This isn’t Grey’s Anatomy.

Rule #5 – Don’t Get Sloppy

Doing shots off the stomach of the girl from Orthopedics is a big no-no. Dancing on the bar is probably frowned upon. And joining in on Jager-bomb races can only lead to trouble. These are extreme examples, but even having one too many beers can put you on the road to embarrassment. Keep track of how much you are drinking, and have a glass of water handy to sip between drinks. If you find yourself getting tipsy, excuse yourself and hail yourself a cab home.

Rule #6 – Keep Trash Talking to a Minimum

You may find it a little harder to keep hospital gossip to yourself once you’ve had a few. Try harder. Chances are if you’re drunk, you may be talking at a louder volume than you think. It’s true what they say — loose lips sink ships, and you could be sinking your career ship if you’re branded the hospital gossip.

Rule #7 – This Is Not Jersey Shore

Alcohol is a mood accelerant. If you dislike someone from the hospital, emotions can run high once you start knocking them back. Don’t pick a fight. Whether it be physical or verbal, fighting at a work happy hour creates an uncomfortable situation for everyone involved and could even lead to your termination if it gets out of hand.

Rule #8 – Remember the Consequences

No matter what happens during happy hour, you’re going to have to deal with the fallout the next day. As fun as your nursing friends might be, you have to know when to say enough is enough. If you are worried you won’t be able to cut yourself off, designate a responsible nurse to tell you when you’ve had enough.

While a happy hour can be a great way to network at work, it can also easily destroy your nursing career with one wrong move. (Like spilling the beans on a delicate patient’s case.) Watch your alcohol intake, keep a cool head, and keep the conversation light and you’ll be fine. Enjoy yourself!
